Eating black pudding.- [Barlow (Thomas)] The Triall of a Black-Pudding. Or, the Unlawfulness of Eating Blood proved by Scriptures, first edition, the Huth-Fairfax copy, title within typographic border with typographic ornament, woodcut initial and headpiece, light surface soiling to title, some margins a little darkened, 20th century calf, gilt, spine faded, [Wing B846], small 4to, by F:N. and are to be sold by John Hancock in Popes Head Alley, 1652.⁂ First edition of this rare and eccentric tract debating the eating of black pudding on theological grounds. ESTC lists 5 copies only. Provenance: Henry Huth (morocco book-label); Fairfax of Cameron (armorial bookplate).
World.- Heylyn (Peter) Cosmographie in foure Books Contayning the Chorographie & Historie of the whole World, and all the Principall Kingdomes, Provinces, Seas, and Isles, Thereof, first edition, engraved additional title and 4 double-page maps by Henry Seile (slightly shaved as usual), letterpress Table of the Climates, woodcut initials head- and tail-pieces, engraved title a little discoloured and with a few small chips or tears to margins, last f. creased, chipped and holed, occasional light finger-soiling to margins, modern cloth, spine label, [Sabin 31655; Wing H1689], folio, for Henry Seile, and are to be sold at his shop over against Saint Dunstans Church in Fleetstreet, 1652.

A treatise of the nature and qualities of such simples as are most frequently used in medicines, first edition, title within double-rule border, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, errata f. at end, title a little chipped at margin, light browning, occasional spotting or marking, 20th century morocco-backed boards, [Norman 1678; Wellcome p. 330; Wing P1135], small 4to, by M. Simmons, for Philemon Stephens, at the guilded Lyon in St Pauls Church-Yard, 1652.⁂ Rare, "Pemell was one of England's first medical authors to write in his native language." - Norman.
Guevara (Antonio de) The Dial of Princes...with an amplification also of a fourth booke . . . entituled The favoured courtier never heretofore imprinted in our vulgar tongue, translated by Thomas North, third edition, black letter, title within elaborate woodcut border, woodcut initials, title lightly browned, occasional worming, mostly restricted to margins but touching text on a few ff., first A4 with short marginal tear just running into text, 2P3 with small portion of lower margin torn away, not affecting text, occasional light marginal soiling, early ink notes to margins, ink and pencil inscriptions to endpaper, bookplate to pastedown, bound with part of a medieval manuscript from the Book of Psalms, later calf, joints cracked, rubbed, spine ends chipped, corners bumped, [STC 12429], small 4to, Nowe newly imprinted by Richarde Tottill, 1582.⁂ Rare edition of this treatise on the conduct of princes and possible source-work for Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus. T4, 1 advertisement f. torn at foot,occasional light foxing or browning, book-label to pastedown, contemporary sheep, neatly and sympathetically rebacked, corners repaired, rubbed, [Gibson 115; Wing B305], 12mo, for Humphrey Moseley, at the Princes Armes in St Pauls Church-yard; and Tho. Whereunto are added some other Choice Secrets or Experiments of Husbandry, first edition, 2 folding woodcut plates, woodcut initials and headpieces, occasional staining or light foxing, a few ink annotations, 20th century mottled half calf, neatly rebacked, [Goldsmiths' 1285; Kress 878; Wing H985], small 4to, for Richard Wodenothe in Leaden-hall-street, 1653.⁂ Rare at auction, with attractive diagrams from the setting out of the lands a manor house and a large farm network. Provenance: William Charles de Meuron, Earl Fitzwilliam (bookplate, sold Sotheby's, 1st & 2nd March, 1948).

Or wine-vineger, in the preservation from, and cure of the plague, first edition in English, title within typographic border (trimmed at foot affecting border, lower corner restored), typographic ornaments, lacking initial blank f., light foxing, 20th century morocco, gilt, [Wellcome III, p.260; Krivatsy 5595; Wing V63], 12mo, by James Young, for O.P. and are to be sold by John Saywell, at his shop, at the sign of the Greyhound in little Britain without Aldersgate, 1653. ⁂ Scarce, first published in Ghent in 1645, where the author held a practice as a physician.

IN THE STYLE OF JAN BAPTIST HUYSMANS; large oil on canvas, landscape with figures in foreground and watermill in the middle distance, unsigned, 85 x 109cm, presented in a good quality 19th century gilt moulded frame. Presented with the painting is a series of correspondence from Messrs Christie's and Messrs Sothebys from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s in regard to this painting. Provenance: this painting is on the market for the first time in around 100 years.Additional InformationThe painting has suffered somewhat. It has been badly over cleaned. There are lots of areas of thinning paint noticeably to the centre of the image just above and to the right of the tree. This has a brown/red hue and under strong light is very thin and shows signs of overpainting. There are also further signs of overpainting throughout and the painting is very dirty. There are a few losses to the slip of the frame but otherwise the frame is in good order.

Some surface dirt and a little light craquelure throughout. There is also some detritus to the canvas and the frame is modern.

AFTER DAVID TENIERS THE YOUNGER; oil on canvas, ‘The Shepherdess’, portrait of a woman holding a tambourine with feather in her bonnet and sheep and landscape beyond, unsigned, with red wax seal verso, 51 x 44cm, framed.Additional InformationThe painting was purchased in the 1950s from a well known and historic Dutch family.We believe this to be a copy of the original held in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg.There is an area of loss to the figure's hair, which shows a patch repair to the reverse. The painting is dirty and also has a small crack running through her dress, approximately 3cm, however under UV light there is very little overpaint and the painting remains in pretty original condition. Some of the moulding is missing to the frame, we do have several sections, but not all sections. There is surface craquelure throughout.
