A silver and enamel compact, in the form of a hand mirror, 11 cm See illustration Report by NG Patch of enamel loss between 3 and 4 o'clock to edge surrounding cover. A couple of small areas of loss to reverse at top and bottom of inner oval. Otherwise enamel with light scratches, grubby but appears complete. Pierced decoration filled with dried powder. Chips and scratches to white enamel on handle. Base of handle unscrews.

STC 19639. This work by the legal writer John Perkins (d.1545?) was first published in c.1560. The Profitable Book was intended as a supplement to Littleton`s Tenures, dealing mainly with points of conveyancing which were not to be found in Littleton. (1)

The word `evolution` appears for the first time on page 2 of the first volume of the Descent of Man, before its appearance in the sixth edition of the Origin of Species in 1872. (4)

Uncommon Rouen edition of this noted translation of Euclid by the French mathematician Didier (or Denis) Henrion, originally published in Paris in 1615 and the first French edition of the complete text.
