From the library of Geoffrey and Elspeth Howe. Geoffrey Howe (1926-2015) held two of the Great Offices of State in the UK Government: Chancellor of the Exchequer and Foreign Secretary. He also served as Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the House of Commons. His prominent position in UK politics in the 1980s and 1990s meant he had a profound influence over domestic, and international, policy making during a turbulent and historic era. His wife Elspeth Howe (1932-2022) also worked in politics, and later became a crossbench Member of the House of Lords serving as Baroness Howe of Idlicote.
