Paul Nash (British 1889-1946)- 'A Scarred Battlefield' Oil on canvas, signed 'Paul Nash' and dated 1918, inscribed by hand to stretcher verso 'To my darling Bunty', approx 51x62cm, framed. (illustrated) Provenance: The property of a private family, inherited by the current vendor from his late grandfathers collection. Part of which has been previously sold here at Wright Marshall Fine Art Auctioneers, Knutsford, Cheshire , being two CRW Nevinson (1889-1946) oil paintings, each depicting WWI biplanes- please see lots 1103, 21st May 2013, and lot 1266, 20th January 2015. NB: Paul Nash is widely considered to be the most important war artist of the Great War. As an official war artist, virtually all of Nash's war time work has found its way to the collections of public institutions, and as such it is incredibly rare for works of this type and period to appear on the open market. On 16th November 1917 Nash wrote a letter to his wife Margaret (Bunty) describing 'the most frightful nightmare of a country more conceived by Dante or Poe than by nature, unspeakable, utterly indescribable'. ON THE REVERSE OF THIS PAINTING IS INSCRIBED 'To my darling Bunty'. CONDITION REPORT: Lot 607: Severe cracks to paint throughout. Under UV light evidence of some cracks being overpainted. Edges flaking in some areas. Difficult to say whether re-lined, it does appear to 'sit up' in places! Cracks are also evident verso. Overall it looks as though it has had some attention in its life and possibly cleaned, neither very well. It is recommended that interested parties assess the condition before bidding. Further Provenance from consigning family: Grandfather's name was Valentine Keenan, born in Dublin but lived in England, worked in banking, died 1982. Had a great love of WW1 art and old masters and bought with his wife during the 1940's from London dealers. This information has come from the vendors parents, the family are trying to find any old photo's of the Nash hanging in Grandfathers house, the family cannot find any receipts/paperwork relating to the Nash. As far as we are aware it has not been exhibited, it was a personal token from husband to wife.
