Conybeare (William Daniel). Ten Plates comprising a Plan, Sections, and Views representing the changes produced on the Coast of East Devon, between Axmouth and Lyme Regis by the subisdance of the land and elevation of the bottom of the sea, on the 26th December, 1839, and 3rd of February 1840, from drawings by W. Dawson, the Rev. W.D. Conybeare and Mrs. Buckland, with a geological memoir and sections, descriptive of these and similar phenomena by the Rev. W.D. Conybeare. The whole revised by Professor Buckland, John Murray, 1840, title, single leaf list of subscribers (listing only 121 subscribers), list of plates, 14-page text, and 10 zinc lithographs, including hand-coloured plan, hand-coloured double-page geological section, and 7 tinted lithographic views (including one double-page), some light scattered spotting to the tinted lithographs, generally in clean condition, original cloth-backed card wrappers, with original printed label to upper cover, some minor marks, large oblong folio Abbey Scenery 129. Rare album of illustrations depicting the famous Bindon Landslide (between Axmouth and Lyme Regis) on Christmas Day, 1839, when millions of tonnes of cretaceous rock detached from the cliffs. Fissures had appeared on the 23rd December and the event attracted large numbers of sightseers. William Buckland and William Conybeare, who lived in the area, together with Buckland's wife Mary produced this higly detailed geological description of the event, which is generally regarded as the first detailed description of a major landslide.
