The canvas tension is slightly slack and there are minor undulations across the surface. The paint layer is stable overall, there are a few light scuffs and scratches. There is a thin varnish layer which does not cover the whole surface but has been locally applied, probably by the artist. There are localised areas of reworking, for example around the top of the telegraph pole. The paint appears dark under UV light but elements of the finished composition cover some of the brushstrokes, it seems likely that this is artist reworking rather than later overpaint. There is a light layer of surface dirt. The frame has a white painted finish with is dirty with water staining in areas.

In 1947 Fishwick moved to Devon where he began teaching at Exeter College of Art, before being appointed Principal of the College in 1958. Closely associated with St Ives painters, Peter Lanyon, Trevor Bell and Paul Feiler, Fishwick regularly exhibited alongside the Newlyn and Penwith societies. Influenced by the abstraction favoured by his Cornish contemporaries, the mastery of colour and light of Turner, and the structural brilliance of Cezanne, Fishwick’s landscapes, which frequently referred to his West Country surroundings both topographically and culturally, are at once completely individual, whilst also belonging to a broader historical context.Condition report: Oil on artists' board. Inspired by his lodgings in the early 1930s, which overlooked the course of The Boat Race, the exterior surfaces of the bowl are adorned with black transfer prints, and overpainted with coloured enamels, depicting race day scenes, while the interior bears an illustration of a busy Piccadilly Circus on race day. The bowl was reissued in 1975 in a limited run of 200, and then in 1986, to honour fifty years since his original Wedgwood commission, Ravilious’ Boat Race bowl was again reissued - this time in a limited edition of 250.Condition report: Some all over crazing and light staining but otherwise in good condition.

Shortly after his arrival, Sobrino co-founded the Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (GRAV), whose members included François Morellet, Julio Le Parc and Yvaral. Today he is remembered as an influential figure in the field of opto-kinetic art. Commenting on his choice of materials, Sobrino noted, “The use of Plexiglas gives birth to manifold plays of light”. Indeed, the present lots reflect Sobrino’s enduring preoccupation with light, space and the relationship between art and science.
