IN THE MANNER OF GUIDO RENI; oil on canvas, portrait of St. Mary Magdalene, unsigned, approx 55 x 43cm, in ornate gilt frame. CONDITION REPORT Canvas is loose, losses of paint to left hand side where canvas meets the frame, small perforation to area on right hand side of the face. A few small areas of retouching visible under UV light, only to edges, areas of crazing to the figure.
A British military issue light cavalry sabre stamped 'Mole' to blade back with painted ribbed grip and stamped broad arrows mark and 1920 to blade base, with leather scabbard, blade length 58.5cm, also a late 19th century French bayonet with wooden grip and a hunting knife in leather scabbard (3). CONDITION REPORT All worn and will need some attention. The sabre with some corrosion to the blade, all with heavy surface wear. The bayonet blade is heavily pitted.
Three swords for restoration comprising a Volunteer Rifles dress example, a German light cavalry sabre with mark for Munich to blade back and a spadroon with wirework grip (all af) (3). CONDITION REPORT All in need of serious restoration, all have issues including corrosion to the blades. The guard on the German example has become detached from the grip at the pommel, the metal covering of the grip back has also come off. The spadroon has severe corrosion to the blade. Heavy surface wear and tear throughout.
A Japanese wakizashi, the tsuba and pommel with chrysanthemum flower detail and cord wrapped shagreen grip, blade length approx 64cm, with scabbard. CONDITION REPORT General surface wear throughout, some light marks to the blade, areas where the finish of the scabbard has rubbed off, some dirt to the grip and throughout.
A small group of mid-19th century military ephemera relating to Sergeant Charles Merricks of Aston, Birmingham comprising his account book, certificate of admission to Royal Hospital at Chelsea and his discharge certificate listing his twenty-one year service in the 68th Light Infantry and Second Battalion 12th Regiment of Foot; he is listed as possessing the Crimean Medal with four clasps and the Turkish Medal.
