Working en plein-air, he vividly captured fleeting light conditions with boldly colourful and simplified compositions. Born in 1923 in Leeds, McIntyre studied as a dentist a the Glasgow Dental Hospital while taking night classes in art at the Glasgow School of Art. Works are held in the collections of the Llyfrgell Geneglaethol Cymru National Library of Wales, the American Embassy in London, the Newport Art Gallery, and the Williamson Art Gallery, among others. McIntyre died on January 13, 2009 in Bangor, Wales. Samuel Herbert (British, b.1976). 'Arm-chair Heroes', 2003. Oil on canvas, 144 x 144 cm. Provenance: From a reputable private collection. Acquired from directly from the artist by the present owner in 2004. Literature: Saatchi Gallery Loan of Art, published by Saatchi Gallery, London, 2006 pp.131. From Saatchi Gallery Loan of Art, pp.129: In his monochrome canvases, Herbert evokes the time when white British men colonized continents before high tea, and retired to their gentlemen's clubs each night. The paintings look like old sepia photographs, their subjects' methods of rule, dress and beliefs as out of dater as the yellowing surfaces. Some of the images Herbert draws on are not that old, as can be seen in The Duke, but all deal in the now-obsolete belief systems.
