A brass-mounted mahogany portable cistern tube pillar barometer Unsigned, in the manner of Daniel Quare, mid 20th century With gilt brass break-arch top mounted with central tube supporting cylinder and finial flanked by further vase shaped finials which turn to adjust the scale pointers, above foliate engraved infill to arch and glazed silvered scale mounted onto scroll decorated block and with wooden panel to rear, the stop-fluted columnar shaft with brass collar to waist and spiral turned lower section, on plinth form base containing cistern fitted with four hinged mask and scroll mounted shaped brass feet, 104cm high, B.C. Ref. 3. This barometer is a faithful copy of a form developed by Daniel Quare at the turn of the 18th century, however several examples of this pattern exist that are signed by John Patrick. An almost exact original example is illustrated in Goodison, Nicholas English BAROMETERS 1680-1860 pages 210 and 211.
A fine George II mahogany cistern tube stick barometer Edward Scarlett, London, circa 1740. The arch-top caddy moulded case with silvered vernier scale and bayonet shaped tube above trunk applied with tall arched silvered scale mercury thermometer signed Scarlett Fecit to upper edge calibrated in unusual units with 0 rated as temperate and with sliding brass pointer above shaped base with spiral volute turned inverted vase shaped cistern cover which also conceals thermometer bulb, 91cm high, B.C. Ref. 6. Illustrated in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETERS Stick or Cistern Tube page 43. Edward Scarlett is recorded by Banfield as born circa 1688 and died in 1743. He worked from the sign of Archimedes and Globe, near St Anns Church, Soho, London from circa 1700 and, according to a trade card, was Optician to King George II. The thermometer scale does not seem to conform to any known recognised units from this period and may have been devised by Edward Scarlett for use on his own instruments. The work of Edward Scarlett is further described in Goodison, Nicholas English BAROMETERS 1680-1860 Part II Some Important Makers and Retailers pages 237-239.

A George IV inlaid mahogany bulb cistern tube stick barometer Charles Howorth, Halifax, circa 1830. With pierced crest above paper scale decorated with rococo scroll borders and signed CHARLES HOWORTH to lower edge with simple brass pointer behind hinged glazed door, the trunk with exposed tube above shaped base with oval vase of flowers inlaid cistern cover, 102cm high, B.C. Ref. 54. Illustrated in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETERS Stick or Cistern Tube page 112. Charles Howorth is recorded by Banfield as working in Halifax 1823-52, he was a prolific maker of stick and angle barometers. His angle barometers had one or two tubes and were identical to those signed by Samuel Lainton (see previous Lot).
A George IV inlaid mahogany bulb cistern tube stick barometer with painted scale George Purcheon, Leeds, circa 1830. With scroll pierced crest and parquetry banded cavetto cornice above floral painted scale signed Geo. Purcheon, Glass House behind hinged glazed door, the trunk with exposed tube flanked by line inlaid panels and fretwork brackets beneath register, the shaped base with vase inlaid oval cistern cover, 98cm high, B.C. Ref. 58. Illustrated in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETERS Stick or Cistern Tube page 116. George Purcheon is recorded by Banfield as working from Glass House, Leeds 1820-40. (See previous Lot).
An early Victorian brass-mounted mahogany mercury wheel barometer Gardner & Dowling, Belfast, circa 1840. The 10 inch circular silvered register calibrated in inches and with drapery swag urn and floral spray engraved centre beneath bowfronted mercury Fahrenheit scale thermometer flanked by brass pilasters and hygrometer to the swan neck pediment with ivory vase finial, the cavetto moulded square base with spirit level signed Gardner & Dowling, Belfast and ivory setting pointer adjustment disc, 111cm high, B.C. Ref. 163. Illustrated in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETERS Wheel or Banjo page 99. The partnership between Henry Gardner and James Dowling is recorded by Banfield as working from 57 High Street, Belfast from 1827.
A mid 18th century cherrywood comb-back Windsor armchair attributed to John Pitt, the shaped top rail above a vase shape splat with three spindles either side and a flat upright, the bow arms on five spindles and curved front supports, the large saddle seat with incised lines, on cabriole legs united by turned 'H' stretcher to pad feet. Old repairs to splat and stretcher. See Regional Furniture, The Journal of the Regional Furniture Society, vol XIX, 2005, pp.20-32 for a similar example with a label to the underside for John Pitt of Slough 1714-1759. There is evidence of a label to the underside of the above lot.
A Dutch walnut and marquetry inlaid open armchair, with penwork decoration, the shaped top rail and scroll arms inlaid scrolling foliage and a flaming urn flanked by griffin, the vase shape splats centred a Roman emperor within a laurel wreath, to scroll supports and a drop in seat the shaped apron on cabriole legs united by a turned edge stretcher, all legs spliced.
