A rare and important Minton aesthetic vase by Charles Toft c1875, with shell moulded body ground in lilac and decorated in the pate sur pate technique with stylized flowers issuing from a central urn, the neck enamelled with cloisonne style decoration is flanked by two looped handles with white jewelled decoration, raised over a Japanese style moulded base on four scroll feet with gilt decoration, signed C.Toft on one foot, impressed Minton 9.25. Note; Charles Toft was a former pupil of Louis Solon. He was a master at Minton and made many of their early exhibition pieces. Examples of signed Charles Toft pate sur pate works rarely turn up for sale. This important example shows two particular influences, the aesthetic movement and devises in particular employed by DR Christopher Dresser, as this particular example combines both influences, it is possibly unique.
