Lot 1931

14th-15th century AD. A shallow glazed ceramic bowl with basal ring, chamfered rim, blue outline panels to the exterior, band of concentric lines, leaves and tendrils to the interior with central floral motif; sticker on the base reading: Saga. Hoi An Hoard. Visal 138130. 883 grams, 25cm (10"). Property of a North London gentleman; formerly with Butterfields Auctions, San Fransisco, USA. In the mid fifteenth century a freighting junk loaded with fine Vietnamese pottery sank in an area of the South China Sea called the “Dragon’s Embrace.” This vase is part of the shipwreck cargo recovered off the coast of Vietnam at Hoi An. The ceramics themselves were probably made in the area of Chu Dau. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

Lot 1953

14th-15th century AD. A glazed ceramic jar with basal ring, deep shoulder and raised rim, three small loops to the outer edge of the shoulder, panels of blue floral motifs to the outer face and rosette to the shoulder. 217 grams, 87mm (3 1/2"). From the property of a London gentleman; formerly in a UK collection, acquired in the 1990s. A deep blue glass vase with piriform body and flared rim, moulded white glass applied decoration comprising a vine to the shoulder with leaves and bunches of grapes in high-relief possibly added later, rosette to the underside with eight radiating veined leaves and central boss. Cf. Lightfoot, C.S., Ancient Glass in National Museums Scotland, Edinburgh, 2007, item 172, for type.186 grams, 12.2cm (4 3/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his father in the 1970s; thence by descent.Fine condition, repaired.

Property of a European professional; acquired by gift from his patient, archaeology professor Witold Dobrowolski (1939-2019) in the 1990s; Professor Dobrowolski was a lecturer at the Institute of Archaeology in Warsaw, and a long-time curator of the Ancient Art Collections of The National Museum of Poland.Fine condition.
