Sketch-books were filled with nothing else. In both the spirited handling of paint and the composition there is nothing still or static in this intimate interior of this fisherman's cottage overlooking the harbour of the north east Yorkshire coastal village. The distinctive 'lilac print' cotton on the subject's head was a distinctive feature of the dress of Staithe's women (oil paint and grease paint t81 and passim)" To be sold with the exhibition catalogues Laura Knight Portraits and Laura Knight in the Open Air (two copies) Fine original condition, no restoration or overpainting, panel not warped or split.
