A DIAMOND AND GEM SET PANEL BROOCH BY CARTIER, modelled as a tree, with cabochon ruby and green agate flowerheads and foliage, accented with individual round brilliant-cut diamonds in millegrain collet settings, above a round brilliant, Swiss and single-cut diamond set trunk and vase of pierced, millegrain design, white precious metal mounted, with yellow metal pin, signed CARTIER and indistinctly numbered, total diamond weight approximately 0.55ct, length 2.65cm Condition report: Rubies have variable pinkish-red hues, most stones with fracture, feather, ‘silk’ and mineral inclusions that are visible under magnification. Some of the rubies have surface-reaching fractures and nicks/chips, all have light surface wear. The green agates are well matched with a cloudy/milky transparency and light surface wear. Diamonds are well matched, bright and lively, with estimated VS1 to SI2 clarity and H to J colour, assessed mounted. Largest diamond weight approx. 0.07ct. The mount has surface wear, scuffs, nicks and occasional areas of thinning to the edges of the setting. The pin is yellow metal, possibly later replaced, and functioning. The signature is positioned to the side of the vase, the number is positioned to the back of the vase but is difficult to read. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 7.9gm.
A DIAMOND AND GEM SET GIARDINETTO BROOCH, designed as a pierced and millegrained vase, pavé set with graduated Swiss, single and baguette-cut diamonds, issuing a spray of pear-shaped, round brilliant and semi-circular cut diamonds, interspersed with circular and navette-shaped mixed-cut rubies, sapphires and emeralds, and round brilliant-cut diamonds of yellow tint, (diamonds untested, assumed to be of treated colour), the panel with additional threaded fittings and vacant threaded apertures to the reverse, white precious metal mounted, total weight of white diamonds approximately 2.70ct, width 4.1cm Condition report: The panel is fitted with two hinged screw fittings and two threaded tube fittings, suggesting that it may previously have be worn as part of a larger jewel or with alternative fittings. The brooch fittings are possibly later added and the visor clasp requires adjustment to allow the pin to be secured in it. The mount has general surface wear, with a small dark solder join/repair to the lower section of the vase. One of the larger brilliant-cut diamonds, weighing approx. 0.30ct, is drawing a yellowish tint, with estimated M colour. Remaining ‘white’ diamonds are well matched, bright and lively, some stones with small fracture or mineral inclusions, with estimated VS2 to P1 clarity and H to J colour, assessed mounted. The diamonds with a pronounced yellow tint/hue are assumed to be of treated colour as all have a greenish LWUV fluorescence, weighing approx. 0.90ct in total. Rubies, sapphires and emeralds are well matched, some stones with surface-reaching fractures/fissures, most stones with multiple inclusions and faint colour zoning. All have surface scuffs, small chips and nicks. Diameter of largest ruby approx. 4.8mm. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 15gm.
A SMALL COLLECTION OF SILVER, comprising a baluster cream jug, Birmingham 1908, a sugar basin, a pepper, and a small spill vase, approximately 5oz overall, together with a silver plated tea kettle on stand (5) Condition report: cream jug has several dents in the spout area. Sugar has two pushes visible from the feet. Vase and pepper have minor knocks and scratches. Tea kettle has a few dings and some scratches.
A GEORGE III SILVER PEPPER, of oval form, on reeded pedestal foot, by Thomas Robins, London 1803, 7cm high; together with a late Victorian silver vase shaped pepper embossed with flowers and scrolling foliage, London 1887, 8.5cm high (2) Condition report: Georgian pepper has some small dents and knocks, especially to the main body, otherwise ok overall.
A DIAMOND AND VARI GEM-SET GIARDINETTO BROOCH, the old and rose-cut diamond edged vase issuing a spray of cushion-shaped mixed-cut citrines and cabochon turquoises, interspersed with diamond set foliage, two colour precious metal mounted, the pin stamped '750', total weight of old-cut diamonds approximately 0.60ct, length 5.5cm Condition report: Scuffs, scratches, nicks and chips to citrines. The largest citrine measures approx. 18.3mm length x 14mm width x 9.4mm depth. Greenish discolouration and brownish veins, fractures, chips and pitting to turquoises. Diamonds have variable colour and clarity, some stones with chips and surface-reaching fractures. Largest diamond weight approx. 0.25ct. The mount has general surface wear, scuffs and nicks, with areas of pitting/porosity to the sides of the mount and patchy thinning to the edges of the settings. Solder joins/repairs are visible at junctions within the panels. The fittings may be later replaced. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 25.3gm.
A CHINESE BLANC DE CHINE FIGURE OF GUANYIN 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY The goddess sits in dhyanasana on a rocky pedestal, with her hands help upon her lap, she wears long flowing robes and strings of beaded jewellery, with a vase and a bird raised on pillars to either side, her two acolytes stand around a footed bowl at her feet, 22.5cm. Cf. The Oriental Ceramic Society, The World in Monochromes, p.114, no.259 for a comparable figural group.
A CHINESE IRON-RED ENAMELLED CELADON-GROUND 'BUTTERFLY' VASE 19TH CENTURY The squat pear-shaped body painted with three butterflies in flight amidst sprays of flowers, with areas of detail picked out in grey and gilt, all reserved on a pale green ground, the base glazed white and with a six character Qianlong mark, 12cm high.
SEVEN SMALL CHINESE MONOCHROME ITEMS QING DYNASTY Comprising: a ge-type bottle vase, a small fanghu with a four character Chenghua mark to the base, a baluster-shaped vase decorated with a mottled dark blue glaze, a bottle vase with a crackled turquoise glaze, a langyao dan ping, a small indigo glazed jar with a metal cover, and a celadon glazed pouring vessel, 24.6cm max. (8) Provenance: from the collection of Professor Ronald N Arnold (1908-1963) and thence by descent. Professor Arnold was Regius Professor of Engineering at Edinburgh University from 1947 until his death. Following ill health, in 1953 he began to collect Chinese porcelain in his free time, buying most of his pieces from small antique shops and auctioneers in Edinburgh and London. Through the art historian David Talbot-Rice, Professor Arnold became acquainted with several experts in the field of East Asian ceramics, including Sir Harry Garner and Soame Jenyns.
A CHINESE PARCEL-GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN MING DYNASTY She sits in a relaxed pose with her arm resting upon her raised knee, with a slender vase to her right side, she wears loose flowing robes adorned with beads and an elaborate crown centred by a figure of Amitabha Buddha, together with a later wood stand, 25cm, 852g. (2) Provenance: from a deceased estate, Hampshire, purchased from Gerard Hawthorn Ltd on 11th July 2006. A copy of the invoice is available.

Provenance: from the collection of Professor Ronald N Arnold (1908-1963) and thence by descent. Professor Arnold was Regius Professor of Engineering at Edinburgh University from 1947 until his death.
