A Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian pottery vase, designed by Richard Joyce, shape No. 88, the ovoid shouldered vase, moulded with stylised deer amongst trees, signed with monogram, stamped 'Royal Lancastrian', 'Made in England',27.5cm highThe vendor is a direct descendant of William Burton (1863-1941). Burton was a chemist at Wedgwood, but moved to Pilkington to oversee the production of fine pottery in the style of ancient Persian and Chinese potters, commissioning work from some of the top designers of the time. Burton was inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement, and in particular, the workings of William Morris and John Ruskin. Condition report: Crazing apparent in various places across the body of the vase. No evidence of cracks, chips. Inside cracked and water stained.
