A KOREAN BUNCHEONG IRON-PAINTED BOTTLE VASE PROBABLY JOSEON DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY The pear-shaped body raised on a short foot, the surface with a creamy-white slip incised with horizontal lines and with two large leafy sprays of ginseng painted to both sides, together with a wood box inscribed with Gyeryongsan (referring to the kiln where it was produced), 23.5cm. (2) Provenance: an English private collection, purchased in Japan. By repute, formerly in the collection of Jun Itami (1937-2011), an architect renowned in Korea and Japan for his primitive-style buildings and his use of raw materials. Itami Jun also collected Korean Joseon ceramics, and pieces from his personal collection were offered at auction after his death. See the University of Michigan Museum of Art, access. no. 2004/1.268, for a comparable vase with similar ginseng leaf design. Also, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, access. no. 2015.79.494 for another example from the Mary Griggs Burke Collection.

A TALL KOREAN CELADON VASE, MAEBYEONG KORYO DYNASTY, 12TH/13TH CENTURY The elegant baluster-shaped body decorated to the side with three incised leafy flowerheads, possibly lotus; the shoulder with three scalloped lappets resembling clouds; the surface covered with a rich crackled celadon glaze, 31cm. See the Cleveland Museum of Art, access. no.1921.628 for a Koryo wine pot with comparable lotus decoration, and access. no.1921.645 for another vase of the same size. Also, see Christie's New York, Japanese and Korean Art, 22nd September 2020, lot 243, for another maebyeong with incised lotus. Provenance: from an English private collection, London. This type of vessel was once used to store alcohol and had a lid that would also serve as a cup.

A LARGE JAPANESE KAKIEMON-STYLE BLUE AND WHITE DISH EDO PERIOD, C.1700 Painted in underglaze blue with a central cartouche enclosing an elegant ho-o bird, the shochikubai (pine, prunus and bamboo) emerging from rockwork beside it; the cavetto with panels variously enclosing Chinese figures, flowering branches and further peacocks, the underside with karakusa scrolls, the base left unglazed; together with a baluster-shaped vase decorated in underglaze blue with peonies and pomegranates amongst tall grasses, the shoulder applied with small studs and handles modelled as mythical creatures with lion heads and fish tails, 34cm and 21.7cm respectively. B. Holt, January 1940, from K.Oikawa, Admiral I.J. [Imperial Japanese] Navy', 24.5cm. (2) Provenance: the collection of Vice-Admiral Reginald Vesey Holt, CB, DSO, MVO, (1884-1957), and thence by descent. The vase was gifted by Admiral Koshiro Oikawa (1883-1958), the Japanese Naval Minister during World War II.

A LARGE JAPANESE IMARI MOULDED VASE AND COVER EDO PERIOD, EARLY 18TH CENTURY The baluster body typically decorated in underglaze blue, gilt, red, green and black enamels, painted with three large panels enclosing flowering branches of prunus, chrysanthemum and peony issuing from rocky outcrops, with a border of lappets above the foot, the shoulder with a wide band of scrolling tendrils and chrysanthemum flowerheads, the neck with a repeated design of open fans; the cover with similar decoration and topped by a large bulbous knop; with sixteen-petal chrysanthemums and other flowers moulded in low relief, 70cm overall. (2) Provenance: the collection of Vice-Admiral Reginald Vesey Holt, CB, DSO, MVO, (1884-1957), and thence by descent. Cf. A SMALL JAPANESE TRIPOD VASE BY MAKUZU KOZAN (1842-1916) MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH OR 20TH CENTURY The bulbous body raised on three slightly everted feet, the crenellated rim elegantly shaped with lappets, painted in monochrome puce with three medallions to the side and a band of scrolling clouds below, the circular panels enclosing scenes of many yokai, the oni and other monsters depicted holding banners, weapons and other implements whilst running haphazardly, on a moulded sayagata (key fret) ground, the base inscribed Makuzu gama Kozan sei, 11.7cm. Provenance: from an English private collection, London. See the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, access. no. 93.3.111 for a pair of vases attributed to Makuzu Kozan featuring panels painted in puce on a moulded key fret ground. A TALL JAPANESE SATSUMA VASE BY THE YASUDA COMPANY MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Richly decorated with numerous panels enclosing figures, birds and flowers, one side with Momotaro riding on a white horse and accompanied by his armour-clad dog, monkey, pheasant and rabbit brothers-in-arms, two oni from Onigashima (Demon Island) warily watching them in the distance; the reverse painted with another horse rider and an attendant fleeing from other warriors; all rendered in polychrome enamels and embellished with a profusion of details in gilt, the base with the Shimazu mon, the Yasuda trademark, and a mark for Nihon and possibly Unzan, 35cm.
