A Royal Doulton Hannah Barlow decorated stoneware vase of tapering baluster form with brown and green enamels on a blue ground, the wavy-edged neck above twin pierced handles, the body with wide band of incised decoration depicting continuous scene of cattle in a landscape, set on a circular foot, the base with impressed Doulton mark, artists initials HBB and the number 423, 17in (43cm) high, no damage or restoration. * Hannah and Florence Barlow were employed at Doulton's London factory from about 1890 onwards. The girls' rural upbringing had a great influence on their work which was of very high quality. Each piece of pottery was first started as a drawn sketch and then incised into the wet clay before firing. This method was labour intensive and therefore very expensive. Hannah became known as the factory's most renowned decorator, concentrating on mainly British farm animal studies, whereas Florence was known for her floral and bird decoration.
