A large late 19th century Continental porcelain vase of elaborate rococo form; the central vignette depicting one of Henry VIII's wives pleading for her life before the seated monarch, hand-decorated and gilded etc., with 'C' scrolls and scrolling foliage and cherub-like figures including a lower cherubic-like figure sitting within an arbour, the reverse central vignette detailing allegories of music, the gilding above a celeste-blue ground (some damage to top but the piece present), impressed mark to underside (41.5cm high) This is not perfect, there is a piece away from the left hand handle which is present within the vase. The rest of this appears to be in reasonable condition, there is some rubbing on the gilding but the items appears to be in good general condition commensurate with age. This item is being sold on behalf of the Blue Cross
A large rouleau vase, mid-19th century, painted in underglaze blue with fighting, identified warriors against a crackled, oatmeal ground, much damaged (61.5cm)There is significant breakage and damage to the rim lip, some of which has been put back together very badly and overall the vase is suffering a lot from brown discolouration to the glaze crazing pretty much over all of the vase, giving the effect of “fish skin”. There is also what appears to be a large vertical crack of approx. 6cm running down the middle of the vase and the underside is also quite brown with staining to the glaze crazing which is prevalent.
A 19th century Chinese porcelain moon flask hand-decorated in under-glaze blue with scrolling lotus, the neck flanked by two sinuous Chilong dragons (damage) (24.5cm high) The vase has sadly suffered with a large crack which runs from the left hand foot of the right hand Karashishi across the face of the vase (approx. 18cm). There is also a small firing crack visible to the inside of the neck approx. 1cm down, apart from this it is in fairly good general overall condition.
A late 19th century Chinese porcelain sleeve vase in Kangxi style hand decorated in underglaze blue with two dragons contesting the sacred pearl, four character mark to underside, 26cm Appears in good general overall original condition with no major problems noted, not restoration, chips, cracks or hairlines etc. See attached images.
Three 20th century pieces: a large Kangxi-style vase decorated with prunus blossom against cracked ice; a Chinese porcelain quatrefoil tea caddy decorated with buildings against mountainous surroundings; a Chinese bowl decorated in enamels with flowers and dragons amongst red reserves against a green ground, on circular foot with artemisia leaf to underside (the vase 30cm high) (3)The tea caddy looks in good general condition overall, the large Kangxi style jar looks in good order and the square bowl has a small 1cm repair to the lip of the rim (see images). There is also a small piece of pottery/glaze in the form of a small chip to the edge of one of the corners. There is a very small match-head sized chip to the end of the corner. Apart from this appears in good general reasonable order.
A blue and white trumpet vase in Kangxi style, 19th century, painted with a feng and dragon amongst flames and precious objects (19.5cm)Good general overall original condition, there a couple of very minor original and very small firing cracks to the underside of the foot and one or two original glaze bubbles. Also one or two minor scratches but no restoration, chips or cracks etc. There is some discolouration to the vase interior otherwise it looks quite good.
An early 20th century Japanese pottery vase decorated with birds amongst prunus blossom against a green ground (minus cover) (18.5cm high) Appears to be in good general overall original condition with no major problems noted. No restoration, chips, cracks, hairlines etc. Although there are small minor blemishes around the lip area at the top of the vase.
Three Chinese porcelain vases, 20th century, one of rouleau form painted in a famille-verte palette in Kangxi style with pheasants on rocks, two in Republic style, one damaged (46cm) (3) The large vase has a 15cm piece away from the top lip and has been re-glued badly and also has a thumbnail sized chip around the edge. The rest of the vase appears in good general overall order although some dirt and discolouration is noted which would probably clean off. Quite nice bright colours on the big vase and a pleasing scene. Chinese characters to reverse and seal mark to the underside. It is noted that the lamp has been drilled for electricity at the back and there is a small hole in the lappets at the bottom. The bottle vase porcelain lamp appears newer and is sitting upon a carved wooden pierced base. Condition appears good on this. The smaller famille vert vase appears in good general overall order with no cracks, chips or restoration noted.
An egg-yolk-yellow vase, early 20th century; the flattened ovoid body moulded and brightly enamelled with magpies in magnolia, prunus and peony, the sides with lotus and a kingfisher in chrysanthemum, handles lost in first firing (42cm). (A similar vase is illustrated in Suzanne Valenstein's 'A Handbook of Chinese Ceramics' (1989) pl. 220)
Michael Wickham (1909-1995) a watercolour/ink and pencil study of flowers in a vase, signed lower-right, framed and glazed (48.5cm x 34cm)Lot 540 issigned by the Artist. The vendor statesthat this and Lot 546 are also by Michael Wickham as they brought them as Wickhams and two ofthe paintings exhibit a photocopy newspaper editorial verso pertaining toMichael Wickham.
An attractive porcelain vase and cover, Kangxi (1662-1722), painted in underglaze blue on the tall hexagonal body with lange leizen separated by potted plants and on three feet, the cover (chipped) with a lingzhi, frits (11.5cm) (2) This has come privately and has a folded foot and a rough pontil mark to the central underside. There are some bubbles present in the foot and the circular foot is not “uniform” although we do not think this indicates any grinding down of glass to the extremities. There is one area of the underside of the foot that has a slight “kink” although this is not necessarily indicative of restoration, the main double spiral stem appears in good order as does the inverted trumpet shaped bowl. The central section of the bowl (although viewable on the outside, prevalent on the insie) has a rising wrythen imperfection that manifests itself as a raised area to the middle although again in our opinion this is natural and not as a result of any problematical issues.
A late 19th century Chinese porcelain vase hand decorated in underglaze blue in Kangxi style with figures amongst country landscape against a ground of prunus blossom against cracked ice, four-character mark to underside (minus cover), 16cm high There are two hairlines emanating in from the top of the lip. Otherwise no cracks, chips or restoration noted.
A rare Qianlong mark and probably period, copper red porcelain vase, the pearl body with flared mouth and foot and under an overall deep red, slightly mottled, glaze, the foot purple, the glaze stopping nearly at mouth and foot, barely visible scratch, six character seal mark in underglaze blue, 31cm. (For a similar vase, 29cm high and with a similar mark, see Sotheby's Hong Kong 8th October 2010, Lot 2656)PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO LIVE INTERNET BIDDING ON THIS LOT, ANYBODY WISHING TO BID ON LOT 84 IS REQUIRED TO LODGE A £3,000 DEPOSIT WITH THE AUCTIONEERS NO LATER THAN 6.00PM ON WEDNESDAY 16TH OCTOBER. ANY DEPOSITS LODGED ARE FULLY REFUNDABLE IF YOU ARE NOT THE WINNING BIDDER.Generally the vase is in good overall untouched original condition with no restoration, chips, cracks or hairlines etc., although it does exhibit a slight scratch to the glaze. There are two areas where the glaze is un-uniform and significantly lighter and these areas are approx. 1cm square each. There are minor pin head sized pieces away from the glaze overall body, the foot rim appears slightly darker than the main body and there is a small original firing blemish to the underside. Except for these “minor faults” the vase is in good general overall condition with no major problems. There is interest at the £40,000 - £60,000 level. We have had several people of high stature in the Chinese ceramic world look at this and the piece is generally considered to be definitely mark and period and there are no cracks, chips, hairlines or restorations noted.
A 19th century flash-cut Bohemian Glass vase, the main slightly tapering cylindrical body decorated in low relief with a highly elaborate continuous scene of hunting depicting a rider heralding, a figure with an owl, birds, deer, hunting dogs and a further figure with a bird tethered to a tie which he is releasing, all amongst ornate scrolling foliage and above a slightly spreading circular foot star cut to the underside, 28.5cm high x 11cm diameter All appears in good general overall original condition with no cracks, chips, restoration or major problems noted. The underside does have some wear and scratches commensurate with age and as expected. Upon close inspection all appears good with one or two extremely minor scratches near the lip at the top.
