A late 19th century Chinese Cloisonné on porcelain vase, having intricate butterfly and flower pattern, AF.The vase cover is split in two and needs repaired. Fragments of the enamel decoration around the crack are missing. Structurally the vase, itself, is intact but there are signs of crazing to the body. The body is also slightly discoloured. Some of the enamel to the body is missing. The vase measures 17cm high overall and 10cm wide.

Johannes Bosschaert, Blumen in einer VaseÖl auf Holz (parkettiert). 26,7 x 20,3 cm.Monogrammiert unten rechts: IB.ProvenienzBrod Gallery, London, 1975 (verso Klebeetikett). - Seitdem in deutscher Privatsammlung.Eine Dynastie nannte Laurens Bol die Familie Bosschaert, die die Gattung des Blumenstilllebens in den nördlichen Niederlanden zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts prägte. Nicht nur, dass Ambrosius Bosschaert, seine drei Söhne sowie sein Schwager Balthasar van der Ast in dieser Gattung tätig waren. Ambrosius, der Begründer der Dynastie, war überdies in einer Reihe von holländischen Städten tätig, in Middelburg, Amsterdam, Bergen op Zoom, Utrecht und Breda, so dass sich der Einfluss nicht auf eine Stadt oder eine Region beschränkte. Johannes Bosschaert, der Autor dieses Blumenstilllebens, war der zweite Sohn von Ambrosius, und er war der talentierteste unter den drei Söhnen; Laurens Bol hat ihn ein Wunderkind genannt. Johannes ist um 1610/11 geboren. Bereits 1626, also als 15jähriger, ist er Mitglied der Lukasgilde in Dordrecht. Er muss früh verstorben sein, nach 1628 findet sich kein Werk mehr von ihm (Laurens J. Bol: The Bosschaert Dynasty, Painters of Flowers and Fruit, Leigh-on-Sea 1960, S. 40ff). Seine künstlerischen Anfänge dürften in der Werkstatt des Vaters liegen, dieser verstirbt jedoch bereits 1621, als Johannes erst um die zehn Jahre alt ist. Seine Kunst zeigt den Einfluss seines Onkels Balthasar van der Ast, dieser wird ihn nach dem Tod des Vaters in seiner Werkstatt aufgenommen haben.Dieses Blumenstillleben vereinigt in einer runden grünen Glasvase Rosen in Weiß und Rosa, Vergissmeinnicht, Akelei und Nelke, verschiedene Tulpensorten und eine Schachbrettblume, eine Blumensorte, die erst im späten 16. Jahrhunderts in die Niederlande gelangte. Insekten – eine Fliege, ein Schmetterling und eine Raupe – beleben das Stillleben. Die Blumen sind kunstvoll und ausgewogen arrangiert: Während die Blüten der rosafarbenen Rose und der Schachbrettblume hängen, ragt eine der Tulpen, die kostbarste Blume im Bild, in die Höhe und belebt mit ihren rot-weißen Blütenblättern die Silhouette des Bouquets. Ein Blumenstilleben von Johannes Bosschaert, um 1625 datiert und in der Gestaltung der Glasvase und dem Arrangement der Blumen vergleichbar, wurde einst im englischen Kunsthandel angeboten und befindet sich heute in einer Privatsammlung (RKD, Nr. 119596).
