EUGÈNE SIBERDT (Belgian 1851-1931) A PAINTING, "Baroness Vaughan, Caroline Lacroix," 1906, oil on canvas, signed and dated L/L, "Eug. Siberdt Janu. 1906." 53" x 33" Note: The sitter is attributed as Caroline Lacroix, last confidant to King Leopold II of Belgium. The artist, Eugène Siberdt was appointed as a court painter some time in the late 1870's according to an entry by the Knohl Collection. The painting possesses clues and symbols to help identify the sitter. The viewer should note the 17th-century tapestry at the lady's back, which has a courting scene motif, at her side an old famille verte Chinese vase with chrysanthemums sits atop a two leg marble top console, and it is accompanied by a frame with portraits of two boys. Her fingers are covered in gold rings with emeralds, diamonds, an opal, and rubies; her wrists with pearl and diamond bangles. She wears a pastel blue silk day dress trimmed with embroidered lace, the dress pinned with a diamond and ruby dragonfly brooch at her breast, and at her neck a delicately strung pearl and jade cross necklace. She stands in chocolate silk beaded shoes on a parquetry floor laid with the pelt of a tiger, and her hand rests atop a lambs wool lined coat with an ermine collar. Layers of wealth and luxury surround the sitter setting her apart from bourgeois portraits by the artist, suggesting her identity could indeed be that of the Belgian, "Queen of the Congo." A CHINESE HORNBILL ARCHAIC STYLE LIDDED VASE SNUFF BOTTLE, LATE QING DYNASTY (1644-1912), the lid of tombeau form is carved with a celestial lion within two mythical beast masks hung with rings over a meander pattern, the tapered vase is carved on each side with figural scenes, one side with a farmer and cow visited by a goddess and the other side myriad swirling clouds reveal a charioted goddess with attendants, flanked by six integral rings, on a rectangular foot with repeating meander pattern. Height: 3 1/4" Width: 1 3/4" Depth: 1/2" Note: The scene is an ancient love story of the Cowherd, Niulang, and the Weaver girl, Zhinü. Both figural representations of the stars Vega and Altair joined only by the Milky Way. Their forbidden love is allowed one day a year to flourish by way of a celestial bridge built by magpies. On this day a festival Qixi (7th Day of the 7th Month) is celebrated by couples and the ancient love poem is revived in pursuit of a happy marriage. Often dubbed the "Chinese Valentine's Day," the participants seek happiness and blessings, modeling their marriage after the ancient celestial lovers. The present snuff bottle beautifully presents the heavenly and earthly communion of the lovers, as well as highlights their unrequited longing by arranging the two scenes as opposing vignettes. Height: 9 1/4" Diameter: 4 3/4" Condition: Good condition for shipwreck porcelain of this age including but not limited to small areas of marine encrustations, surface glaze degradation, small patches of slight surface abrasions, surface sand/soil buildup and foot is not perfectly circular so vase has a slight wobble. A CHINESE DOUBLE GOURD BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN VASE, SHIPWRECK ARTIFACT, LEAF MARK, KANGXI PERIOD, EARLY 18TH CENTURY, of double gourd form and a flaring circular rim on a cylindrical neck with exotic long leaf banding, over a rounded knob with sides centering fan shaped reserves enclosing an ancient pine in a fenced garden opposite a weeping willow in similar garden, above a larger bulbous base with fan form reserves each painted as a traditional maiden in varying pursuits set within a fenced garden, raised on a conforming flaring foot with leaf tip detailed banding enclosing an underside with underglaze blue Artemis leaf mark. Height: 10" Diameter: 5 1/2" Condition: Good condition for shipwreck artifacts including but not limited to surface encrustation, hairline crack, areas of glaze degradation, dirt buildup and a few light surface abrasions.
