Alecos Fassianos (Greek, 1935-2022)La petite terasse, 1978 signé 'A. Fassianos' (en haut à gauche) et daté '1978' (en haut à droite); signé, titré et daté 'FASSIANOS LA PETITE TERASSE 1978' (sur le châssis)huile sur toile96.5 x 146cm (38 x 57 1/2in).signed (upper left) and dated (upper right); signed, titled and dated ' (on the stretcher)Footnotes:ProvenanceGalerie Beaubourg, Paris.Private collection, Athens.LittératureJ.M. Drot, La Volupté Mythologique, Galerie Beaubourg, Paris / Marval, Paris / Ileana Tounta, Athens / Bernard Voisin, Chenonceau, 1985, p. L under the title La gare d'Olympia avec poisons (illustrated).Captured in Fassianos's extraordinary signature blues, this striking canvas seizes the moment through timeless forms, integrating many of the defining elements of the artist's universe: the graceful corporeal figures, the small fish of the Aegean, the simple scarf, the straw chair, the humble flowers in a vase, the ubiquitous bicycle on the extreme right. 'Blue is the colour in which Fassianos discovered himself' notes Nobel laureate O. Elytis. 'A colour which he voiced in every scale, distilling one tone into another, yet ensuring that they retain their limpidity, never losing a fraction of their profound, deep-sea magic.'1 Drawn in sharp profile and set against a solid background that accentuates their monumental scale, two ordinary friends are remoulded into archetypal figures echoing the timeless symbolism of ancient Greek vase iconography. 'The wind which tosses the hair of Fassianos's figures is the same wind which pervades Homer's epics and fills Odysseus's sails on his way to meet the Sirens.'2 1 O. Elytis, 'The Fassianos we Love', preface to A. Fassianos, exhibition catalogue, Zoumboulakis Galleries, Athens 1977.2 J. Lacarriere, 'A Shadow Play' in Fassianos - Mythologies of Everyday Life, exhibition catalogue, National Gallery - Alexandros Soutzos Museum, Athens 2004, p. 24.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Constantinos Parthenis (Greek, 1878-1967)La Vierge de la victoire huile sur toile56 x 32cm (22 1/16 x 12 5/8in).oil on canvasFootnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist's Estate. Private collection, Athens.A spiritual equivalent to Parthenis's heroic Apotheosis of Athanasios Diakos, this mesmerizing work of dazzling virtuosity and timeless elegance lies at the core of the artist's achievement, conveying an uplifting feel and a conviction that faith can elevate human consciousness to a higher sphere. Ethereal, idealized and weightless, the sacred figures, captured in translucent colours, feathery forms, and delicate segmented lines, occupy a purified world of universal peace and divine harmony. Set in a starry stage-like apse shimmering with glowing blues and greens, the crowned Virgin, seated on a high throne with the Christ Child on her lap, is holding a figurine of Nike1 in her extended right hand—a variant of the Byzantine cruciform sceptre. To the right and left of her footstool there are two flying angels-musicians2, while the lower part is occupied by an ascending dove on the left and a third winged figure who rushes to celebrate the victory of Christianity raising both arms towards the blue heavens.3Abbreviated shapes, fine lines and curvilinear motifs which echo the simplicity of ancient Greek vase painting, translucent forms, and sensitive, diluted colours applied on the reverse side of the canvas to better capture the spiritual immaterialisation of the so called acheiropoiitos Byzantine icons,4 create a magical dreamscape of pure poetry, a transient melody celebrating 'Madonna della Vittoria' as a lofty symbol of universal order, harmony and peace.1 The winged goddess who brought victory in both battle and athletic contests.2 Drawing from the poetic atmosphere of the symbolist era, angels represent a recurrent theme in Parthenis's work. In his paintings not intended for worship, the angel wings are stylised in an Art Deco fashion.3 The whole composition is more developed compared to the monumental Virgin Nikopoios in the collection of the National Gallery in Athens.4 Holy paintings thought to have been created without the intervention of human hand. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
