A fine Chinese Blue and White Vase decorated in early Ming Style with Fruit, Qianlong Period (1736-1795) of compressed globular form with a short cylindrical neck slightly flaring at the rim, decorated in brilliant cobalt blue with `heaping and piling` effects, the body with sprays of fruit, pomegranate, lychee and lotus, the base with a repeating band of lotus form panels with ju’i lappets, the shoulder with a band of ju’i form lappets and the neck with a band of repeating key pattern, the glaze stopping neatly at the foot. The design of this vase reflects Ming pieces of the Yongle period. Delicately painted sprays of fruit employing ‘heaping and piling’ effects to emphasise three dimensionality in the representation are set on a clear white ground with elaborate borders. The style was admired by both the Yongzheng and Qianlong Emperors and there are well known imperial pieces in this design. While unmarked, the quality of this vase is excellent with carefully detailed brush work and a composition which is harmonious with the form of the piece." A fine Chinese blue and white bottle Vase decorated with figures, Kangxi period (1662-1722), of mallet shape form, the body of ovoid globular form with a cylindrical neck slightly flaring at the top, the decoration in brilliant cobalt underglaze blue, with a continuous scene of court figures in a rocky landscape with a plantain tree and rocks, the neck with stylized t’ao-t’ieh masks between diaper bands, the base with two concentric circles, Footnote: The form of this piece, the paste of the foot rim, the brilliance of the blue and the quality of the brushwork with detailed shading effects suggest a dating early in the Kangxi period. A very fine pair of Chinese enamel and gilt decorated small bowls dating from the late 18th century the small bowls of ogee shape with mazarin blue enamel extensively overpainted in two tones of gold with scrolling lotus decoration. The interior with duck egg blue enamel and gilt metal borders. Accompanied by two small wooden stands which do not quite fit with the base of the bowls. A finely enamelled Chinese famille rose vase, Yongzheng period (1723-1734) with a Bluett and Sons’label, accompanied by a wood stand of elegantly potted pear shape bottle form with a slightly flaring rim decorated in famille rose enamels with a seated cat in a stylized garden scene with a vase of chrysanthemum flowers on a stand, flowering lotus and four butteflies, the base glazed and with a label for ‘Bluett and Sons’, the matching hardwood stand probably 19th century Provenance : By descent from the vendor’s father who received advice concerning many of his acquisitions from the celebrated English collector H.M.Knight who died in 1970. Included with the vase is an envelope entitled “Sent on the instructions of Mr H.M.Knight” containing a Bluett’s ‘with compliments slip’ on the back of which is a description which reads “ An old Chinese porcelain bottle-shaped vase decorated in rose enamels, ‘rouge de fer’ etc. with vase of flowers, butterflies and recumbent cat in white enamel. 18th century.”" Ht 15.5cm (overall), 13.3cm (vase) View on auctionatrium.com
A fine Chinese ‘Ge ware’ vase, Yongzheng six character seal mark and of the period, the base with a Bluett and Sons label , accompanied by a matching wood stand of typical archaistic ‘hu’ form with a ribbed bulbous body, a slightly spreading foot, elephant head handles to the sides and a slightly flaring neck, covered with an light greenish grey glaze with an irregular ‘fine wire’ dark grey crackle within which are very fine gilt crackle lines, the foot rim dressed in a dark brown wash and the base with a well drawn six character Yongzheng seal mark in underglaze blue and an affixed Bluett and Sons label, the matching stand probably 19th century. Provenance : By descent from the vendor’s father who received advice concerning many of his acquisitions from the celebrated English collector H.M.Knight who died in 1970. Perhaps held in low esteem at the time because of the damage this vase was used as a lamp, fortunately with a removable metal fittingwhich, when taken away, revealed a piece in excellent condition apart from the old visible chip at the top. ‘Ge’ and ‘Guan’ type glazes were copied for the court during the eighteenth century and various marked examples are known. The ‘Ge’pieces tend to have a more matt glaze as here and the crackle lines are more precisely defined. Two types are known; perhaps the rarer one is as here where the dark grey crackle is combined with a fine gilt floss effect. A large Cantonese porcelain `Palace` Vase, Daoguang period, circa 1820-30, of slender necked inverted baluster form with a turnover scalloped rim and applied slender dragon handles, the celadon body enamelled in underglaze blue and polychrome enamels with mythological and equestrian figures and figures about an altar piece within an extensive pagoda landscape with flowering prunus, peony blossom, bats, birds, butterflies and other insects, the borders similarly decorated with precious objects. This piece is representative of the finest quality wares made for export to the West by the Chines in the early nineteenth century. The combination of underglaze blue and overglaze enamelling indicates that multiple firings were required to produce the finished decorative effects.
