On the shoulder yellow dragons on black ground. Marked by underglazed blue six-character mark 'Gunangxu' on the bottom. Restored at the rim , H: 39,5 cm.

YABU MEIZAN: A SUPERB AND LARGE SATSUMA VASE WITH SPARROWBy Yabu Meizan (1853-1934), signed Yabu MeizanJapan, late 19th to early 20th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)The ovoid body rising from a recessed foot to an everted flat rim, finely enameled and gilt to the sides with a bird in an autumnal branch, the slightly rotten leaves are achieved with great naturalism and the complete image stands out beautifully against the pure ivory white crackled ground, the lip with a band of floral scroll. Signed to the base YABU MEIZAN within a gilt seal.HEIGHT 23.6 cmCondition: Two tiny, restored chips underneath the outer lip, otherwise excellent condition with minor wear to gilt.Provenance: From an important East German private collection, mainly assembled in the 1970s and 80s.Yabu Meizan (1853-1934) was a Japanese artist and workshop owner known for painting on porcelain. His studio produced high-end Satsuma ware and he was one of the artists who continued the tradition of high artistic quality while also successfully exporting. Meizan actively marketed his work internationally as well as domestically, taking an active role in organizing the presentation of Japanese wares at world fairs.Auction comparison: Compare with a closely related vase by Yabu Meizan depicting a similar motif and of almost the same size at Christie's, the Avo Krikorian collection: Innovation and inspiration of Meiji period design, 19 February 2007, Geneva, lot 47 (sold for 26,400 CHF).
Pair of Vienna style two-handled vases and covers, each reserved with a panel painted by K. Weh with either 'Schmukung der Venus' or 'Rinaldo and Armida', the reverse painted with classical figures against claret, pink and gilt heightened ground, raised on square bases, beehive mark in blue, script titles in black H37.5cm Condition Report:Chip to underside of cover rim, small nibble to the rim and various missing jewels. The body and square base both have some loss of gilding, very minor scratches and losses to the jewels. The other vase and cover have various missing jewels, very minor surface scratching and the base looks to have some replacement jewels. Both bases have felt glued to the top.

A 20th century Chinese porcelain vase of baluster form, hand painted two cobalt blue dragons, chasing a flaming pearl, bears four character Kangxi marks,Condition report: Blemishes of manufactre, there is a glaze crack about 3ins long in the lower half of the vase, no signs that it's gone through the body, just the glaze, no visible restoration.
