Autograph Letter in the third person, signed Miss Burney to address panel, dated January 15th, 1784, 1pp. letter addressed to Miss Hamilton, "Mrs Delany depends upon Miss Hamilton not withstanding" regretting not being able to visit, year on date written in a different hand, loosely tipped into volume 1 of Diary and Letters of Madame D'Arblay, Author of Evelina, Cecilia, &c., edited by Her Niece [i.e. Charlotte Frances Barrett], 7 volumes, London: Henry Colburn, 1842-46, engraved portrait frontispiece to each volume, some spotting and toning, modern bookplate of Arnold Haskell to upper pastedowns, all edges gilt, contemporary calf, gilt decorated spines with contrasting morocco labels (one volume number label deficient & one with loss), rubbed and light wear, 8vo Mrs Mary Granville Delany (1700-1788) was an artist and friend of Royalty who lived in a house provided by King George III. The novelist and diarist Fanny Burney was a frequent visitor while engaged as Keeper of the Robes to Queen Charlotte. Mary Hamilton (1756-1816) was a courtier and diarist. She was a friend of many of the prominent literary figures such as Mary Delaney, Elizabeth Montagu and Fanny Burney. Mary Hamilton was the granddaughter of Lord Archibald Hamilton, the youngest son of the 3rd Duke of Hamilton and Lady Jane Hamilton, daughter of the Earl of Abercorn. In 1777 Mary Hamilton became a member of George III's court, acting as assistant governess to the Princesses, a position she held until 1782. This letter reads "Miss Burney presents her best respects to Mrs. Delany, & is truly sorry it is out of her power to have the honour of waiting upon her tomorrow: but she has an appointment with Mrs Ord to accompany her to the last rehearsal of a new opera, which begins at 12 o'clock, & will not be over till four. Miss B. is extremely obligied to Miss Hamilton for her very kind use of secret influence, & both grieved & mortified not to be able to benefit from it. She hopes Mrs. Delany will have the indulgence to admit her some day in next week; though she dare not hint at such a wish for the [?]vase, lest it should be impracticable. St. Martin's Street, Jany. 15th [1784]". (7)
