A pair of Vienna porcelain small baluster vase table-decorations, c.1770, painter’s purple 30 mark to one, with waisted foliate necks, painted with flowers, each neck issuing bouquets of flowers and with trailing flowering stems applied at the shoulders, the fluted socles enriched with purple alternating with gilding, on square plinth bases, the tallest 15.9cm high (2)
A Worcester 'Mobbing Birds' baluster vase, c.1757-58, probably painted by I. Rogers, with various birds including a horned owl perched on the branch of a diagonally slanting tree in a landscape vignette, surrounded by birds in flight, the reverse with two birds in flight, 18cm high Footnotes: Note: The decoration of the present vase is very similar to one of a pair of vases in the British Museum of the same height and form. The present lot and the British Museum vase have the same horned owl, and although the other birds don’t appear to be identifiable, their type, colouring and configuration (whether perched or in flight) are the same on both vases. The habit of the slanting tree is also the same on both vases, suggesting that the present vase may once have been part of the same garniture of vases as the British Museum vases. See Aileen Dawson, The Art of Worcester Porcelain, London, 2007, pp. 68-69, no. 21, where the author notes the similarity of the bird decoration on the British Museum vases to a baluster form vase and cover in the Klepser Collection, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and suggests that the Minneapolis vase may once have belonged to the same garniture as the British Museum vases. A baluster form vase (without a cover) decorated with the same configuration of birds from the Crane Collection was sold by Bonhams, London, on 31st March 2010, lot 167 (and was formerly in the Rous Lench Collection sold by Christie's, London, 29th May 1990, lot 485).Condition Report: Overall in good decorative order. Some light scratches and surface dirt to the body, some small scratches and loss of paint to a couple of birds, no signs of overpainting.
