Lid has two drill holes on top. Has been re-glued all the way along one side edge and some pieces of carved scrolls missing. Base has nail hole on one edge, otherwise good condition

Late Nineteenth Century, Very Large, Japanese Satsuma Vase of Inverted Baluster Hexagonal Form, hand decorated with massed chrysanthemums and peonies, against a vertical ribbed ground, the whole thing being interspersed with 14 portraits of famous poets each with an extract from one of their poems, all in overglaze enamels and rich gilding, signed to the base 'Satsuma' with the Shimazu Mon. It is 43 cms high, in very good condition, with a little age wear to some of the overglaze gilding.
