A FINE FAMILLE ROSE FACETED SQUARE VASE SEALED JIN PINQING (1862-1908), GUANGXU PERIOD (1875-1911), QING DYNASTY The archaic white vase has a classic cong-shaped body with a pair of molded mask and ring handles applied to both sides. Each rectangle panel is finely painted with a different scene referring to traditional Chinese paintings: three depicting poetic scenes of flower-and-bird; and the fourth depicting an old scholar with a round fan in hand, preaching to a child. Three facets are identified with poetic inscriptions; and each scene is followed by varied iron-red seals of the artist, including his name Pingqing, as well as alternative studio name of Hao.Jin Pinqing (1862-1908), whose studio name is Hao, was a late Qing dynasty porcelain artist from Yi County, Anhui Provenance. Along with Cheng Men and Wang Shaowei, Jin Pinqing was one of the three pre-eminent artists of the Qianjiang Cai style of porcelain painting at the Jindezhen kilns. Best known for his excellence in classical Chinese flower-and-bird painting as well as the meticulous techniques in famille-rose palette, Jin Pinqing was appointed to paint the royal porcelain for the Empress Dowager Cixi. While Jin Pinqing merely painted figures, this exquisite faceted square vase with depiction of an old intellectual preaching to a child is undoubtedly a rarely-seen piece made by the artist, which was presumably a present to an important royal officialFrom a European private collection 29 cm. Beginning with two hand looms in a small shop in 1876, Gray's later grew to become one of Britain's most successful carpet manufacturers. By the 1930s, it had showrooms in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Dublin, and Belfast, as well as international representatives in Europe, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Known in the carpet trade for having developed the 'seamless kidder', company founder William Gray was a world traveller and avid art collector in his private life. The Chinese and Japanese artworks from his collection, most notably a massive Kinkozan satsuma vase, a large ivory and lacquer Takarabune and the present lot, all reflect the exquisite taste of the Scottish entrepreneur.
