A Chelsea-Derby porcelain reticulated eel-trap vase, circa 1760, emblematic of 'Water', inspired by a Meissen model, part of a set of four 'Elements' vases produced in two sizes and designed by J. J. Kändler, modelled as an oviform eel basket resting on a sloped rocky ground, with two pierced rows to the everted rim and shoulder, the wicker work of the basket picked out with gilt lines to a white glazed ground, bullrushes extending up the sides into handles, a pair of waterfowl applied at the base and three eggs hidden in the foliage to the far side, further enamelled with a butterfly and two insects to the body, patch marks to base, 14 by 22cm high.Provenance: Private Deceased Estate.Notes: See comparable vase in the collection of the V&A, museum number C.315-1935.Evidence of restorations, at least one of the vertical reticulated sections repaired. Hairline crack visible inside neck. Generally in good restored condition.
