A 19thC Chinese Cantonese porcelain vase of square section, painted in rich colours and with gilding, the front depicting an emperor standing on a balcony in his mountain palace, bearing a two-character mark in gold within the design, numerous other figures, a deity looking down from the clouds above, the scene continued onto the sides having a pair of moulded mask ring handles, the reverse showing numeros figures and two buffalo amidst cloud scroll, Height 16.5”. RANAVALONA III : (1861-1917) Last Sovereign of the Kingdom of Madagascar 1883-1897. As Queen, she tried to stave off colonization but French captured the Queen´s palace in 1895. Ranavalona was exiled in 1897 first to the island of Réunion and later to Algiers. She was never permitted to return to Madagascar. A.N., on her mourning printed visiting card, Algiers, 2nd August 1902, to Mme Widow of Sarlonde, in French. The printed text stating `Ranavalona - Former Queen of Madagascar - Villa du Bois de Boulogne - Algiers´. The Queen states in the third person `[The Queen] regrets having missed the pleasure of thanking in person Madame Sarlonde for the beautiful vase she has received and sends her best wishes for her trip.´ Accompanied by the original mourning envelope poststamped. Also including a contemporary unsigned stamped printed postcard showing to the front an image of Queen Ranavalo, with an annotation dating July 1901. VG £100-150
