Fine Pair Japanese Kyoto Satsuma Vases. Meiji Period signed Taizan Yohei IX. Each tapering cylindrical vessel with upturned shoulder continuing to a short bottle-form neck and rim, decorated with sparrows in flight amidst foliage on a bright blue and russet ground Cf. Taizan Yohei IX (Takashashi Yohei, 1856-1922) was the leader of the 9th and last generation of the Takahashi dynasty of Awata Potters. The first of the Takashashi potters established themselves during the late 17th Century. The second generation of potters adapted the name Taizan, which was subsequently used for the next 200 years. Taizan Yohei was a renowned potter specializing in tea wares and in particular pottery with a bright blue ground abound with foliage, birds and butterflies. His pottery was highly sought after by collectors in America. He exhibited and won prizes at numerous International exhibitions, including the 1893 World Expo in Chicago. Two Chinese Jade Pendants. The first, a translucent moss green jade fish, tapering from top to bottom, with a gaping mouth, pierced for hanging, the second, possibly 19th Century, a yellowish ochre opaque jade, depicting a bamboo stalk fitted as a vase. Size: 3 3/8 in.
Chinese Archaistic Bronze Double-Handle Vase The underside with an incised character mark. The flared bulbous body with a wide collar cast with an overall trellis pattern, with flattened loop handles issuing forth from lions’ heads, on a tall, flared base with a Taotie mask on a trellis ground, the patina a textured greenish-dark gray. Size: 6 1/2 x 13 1/2 in.
Qing Dynasty, unmarked. The tall ovoid vase with a domed cover, reserved on both sides with birds and foul amidst blossoming plants emerging from rockwork, the sides with smaller reserves containing flowers, within an upper stylized ruyi border, with a lower border of lappets, on a ground of scrolling vines with blossoming chrysanthemums. Persia, Ca. 18th century AD or earlier A copper vase of a bulbous body with honeycomb-like decoration resting on a rounded, splayed foot with an open-work design. The neck is long and its mid-section is embellished with four incised collars. Ca. 525-500 BC A large Etruscan amphora by Micali painter with double sided panels of black and red sirens are beautifully rendered as well as looming pairs of eyes and accented in ivy. The actual name of the prolific Etruscan black-figure vase-painter, is unknown. Nevertheless, consistent individual characteristics of style suggest a most unique talent. He is called the Micali Painter, having been named in honor of the Italian scholar who first published some of the vases he painted. This is a splendid example of his work Amphora stands 16" tall and has had expert museum grade restoration. It was purchased in Frankfurt, Germany in the early 1960s. Estimated Value $7,500 - 15,000. This piece has been precisely dated having undergone Thermo Luminescence analysis by Ralf Kotalla, an independent German Laboratory. The samples collected date the piece to the period reflected in its style, whilst also showing no modern trace elements.
