A VERY RARE CHINESE CIZHOU MEIPING VASE, the everted short neck above the rounded shoulder tapering towards the unglazed conical foot, the body covered in alternating spiral bands of turquoise and violet against a creamy-white glaze, Ming, 14th/15th century, 10.25"" high. Provenance: The Collection of James Fairfax A.C., Stanbridge Mill, Gussage All Saints, Dorset. The wonderful spiral decoration on this meiping is exceptionally rare. No other vase in this pattern is recorded. An alms bowl is extant in The Burrell Collection, Glasgow, no. 38/462 (see illustration opposite). A FINE LARGE CHINESE FLAMBE-GLAZED BOTTLE VASE, the long neck with three single relief bands, the lower body with a twin band, on a spreading foot, covered in a rich and complex glaze with fine bluish markings on a crushed-raspberry ground, the base with old collection and exhibition labels, Qing, Yongzheng/Qianlong, 14"" high. Provenance: The William Lockwood Collection, Nottingham (see labels on the base of the vase). Private collection, Herefordshire.
A CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE BALUSTER VASE decorated with four roundels showing boys in landscape settings beneath butterflies, on a gilt coral ground, Jiaqing, 7.5"" high. An almost identical vase is illustrated in the ""British Museum Guide to the Pottery and Porcelain of the Far East"" 1924, page 98.
A CHINESE CELADON JADE MAGNOLIA-FORM VASE, the opaque stone with some light mottling and occasional darker markings, the larger cavity formed by a six-petal flower, flanked by the smaller, the base formed by conjoined foliage, late Ming/early Qing, 6"" high. Provenance: The Collection of Lt. Col. Digby Willoughby MC, MBE (1934-2007), acquired whilst on active service in the Far East between 1954 and 1975, and thence by descent.
