A VERY RARE CHINESE CIZHOU MEIPING VASE, the everted short neck above the rounded shoulder tapering towards the unglazed conical foot, the body covered in alternating spiral bands of turquoise and violet against a creamy-white glaze, Ming, 14th/15th century, 10.25"" high. Provenance: The Collection of James Fairfax A.C., Stanbridge Mill, Gussage All Saints, Dorset. The wonderful spiral decoration on this meiping is exceptionally rare. No other vase in this pattern is recorded. An alms bowl is extant in The Burrell Collection, Glasgow, no. 38/462 (see illustration opposite).
