Decorative Early 20th Century Sampler, designed in five areas separated by drawn thread work, the samples include the alphabet, stitching styles, embroidery, around a central image of a monkey and other animals around a tree, within an oval cartouche, worked on linen, with a natural coloured silk and cotton threads, signed Doris Moxon and dated 1915, 38cm square, mounted not framed. Another Similar of a Vase of Flowers within a decorative border, signed DH 1923, 36cm by 39cm (2) Provenance: Doris Clare Moxon was born in the Beverley area on December 31st 1887. The family later moved to Whitby and lived at Carr Hall, Briggswath, which later became the middle school of the Order of the Holy Paraclete. Doris studied at the Royal College of Art, and later joined the community of the Order of the Holy Paraclete in July 1928, dropping the name Doris she now became known as Sr Clare in community. The DH is possibly Sister Dorothy Hirst, she was a teacher in Ghana for many years.
