Chinese silk embroidered panel, late 19th century, 41in. X 29in. 104cm. X 74cm. The light terracotta silk ground embroidered in coloured silks and metal threads depicting an ivory silk embroidered elephant in ceremonial dress transporting a vase of auspicious objects with attendant bats on his back, surrounded by flowers and foliage and garden scenes. All within a silk brocaded border and lined with pale blue silk. Shattering to the silk ground and with some water marks.
Dokhtar-i-Qazi prayer rug, Timuri tribe, west Afghanistan, circa 1930s-40s, 4ft. 10in. X 2ft. 10in. 1.47m. X 0.86m. Slight wear in places with few small crease marks. Slight loss to ends. Very dark blue mihrab with all over small shrub or vase motifs repeated above the prayer arch and similar geometric motifs in the main border. Cf. MacDonald, Tribal Rugs, p. 91 for similar.
