A Pair of French Ormolu-Mounted, White Marble and Porphyry Candelabra, signed Joan F.R. Lorta, Sculp., 1788, representing Summer and Autumn from the Four Seasons, the classical figures semi-clad in draped robes supporting a fluted vase issuing a central incense burner and candle arms draped with garlands of fruit, flowers and buds, each signed to the base, fitted for electricity, 141cm high; and A Pair of 19th Century White Marble Octagonal Shaped Pedestals, with variegated marble panels, 50cm by 50cm by 104cm The figures of Summer and Autumn are derived from the set of four candelabra supplied in 1788 by Jean-François Lorta to Adelaïde and Victoire, daughters of Louis XV, for the château de Bellevue. There they remained until Empress Josephine moved them to the Tuileries in 1807. In 1830 the group was split up and eventually reunited in the 20th century where they remain today at the Louvre For a similar example catalogued as Jean-François Lorta, 1788, see Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Legion of Honor, Gallery 11, Accession number 1962.39, Acquisition date 1962-10-08 For a similar pair with porphyry bases see Sotheby's, London, Anonymous Sale, 24-25 November 1988, lot 31 For a matched set of four see Christie's, The Collector, English and European Furniture, 10 April 2018, lot 123 Both candelabra are in good condition. The central incense burner to one of the candelabra is slightly misshapen. the marble pedestals are reasonable but do have some chips/minor damages mainly around the platform tops and bases, simply due to the sheer weight from moving them. Platform bases are separate pieces and the platform top again is separate (see images).
After the Antique: A Bronze Warwick Vase, of typical form, on a square plinth, 34cm wide Having been discovered at Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli, when a pond in the grounds was drained in 1771, the ancient Roman vase became known as The Warwick Vase when it was passed from Sir William Hamilton, British Envoy at the Court of Naples, to his nephew George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick. The sensation caused by the vase led to a great many copies being made, usually in bronze, the present example being typical . Some wear and surface scratching throughout.
