LOTS 71-73By descent through the family to the present vendor.John Grimes Harvey Esq was a prominent figure in hunting circles. His family were gentlemen farmers on the Isle of Wight and in 1845 his father and other friends created the Isle of Wight Foxhounds. Father and son both held the office of Mastership of the ISW Hunt, carrying the horn for many seasons. John Grimes Harvey was considered a good sportsman and fine horseman and in 1888 he was offered the appointment of Royal Huntsman to Her Majesty’s Staghounds known as the Royal Buckhounds based at Ascot. A silver two-handled Warwick Vase,by Goldsmith and Silversmith Co., Ltd., 1912,a variant of the original design, on pedestal square base, 39cm wide, 24cm high, approximately 95oz'I built a noble greenhouse and filled it with beautiful plants. I placed in it a Vase, considered as the finest remains of Grecian Art extant for size and beauty.'So wrote George Greville, Earl of Warwick. The original marble vase had been discovered in fragments when a pool was drained at Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli, by Gavin Hamilton c.1770 and came into the Earl of Warwick’s possession via his uncle Sir William Hamilton. It is now in the Burrell collection, Glasgow and a copy is at Warwick Castle.
