George Hammond Steel (1900-1960) - A still life with flowers in a vase Oil on canvasboard Signed lower right 36 x 25.5 cm. (14 1/4 x 10 in) George Hammond Steel (1900-1960) was the son of the artist G. T. Steel, and was both a painter and a stained glass designer. He studied at Sheffield School of Art, and attended classes in Birmingham and London. The present collection of works by Steel, from a private UK collection, show the artist's interest in rich textures, and his method of applying succesive layers of paint to build up complicated forms and surfaces. Steel had his first one-man exhibition at the Graves Gallery in 1941, and has exhibited widely, including at the Paris Salon, and the Royal Academy where he has shown 15 times since 1926.
