Lot 362

A tall slender, silver plated twin-handled, Zeppelin commemorative vase. Key-Pattern bands to rim, shoulders and base, with applied copper aviator`s badge of eagle on globe within Imperial crowned wreath, with `19` and `17` engraved on bold figures on either side, with inscription below `Helmut Bruck. Zum Andenken an die unverganglichen Heldentaten von Z8 und LZ.90` (In commemoration of the imperishable and heroic deeds of Z8 and LZ90). Maker`s mark `GE Juncker, Berlin SW68` inside base. Height 40.5cm. GC minor dents, illustrated on outside back cover.

Lot 366

A presentation vase to Lieutenant William Robinson RFC who won the V.C. for attacking and destroying the Zeppelin airship SL-11 on the night of 2 September 1916. Made from an empty 175mm shell case writhen stem, with applied copper decorative bands to base and rim, with two brass and copper lions heads, ribbons and wreaths around the top and engraved plaque `Presented to William Robinson Esq, Zeppelin strafer 39Sqn R.F.C.` Height 34.5cm; With Photostat details. GC illustrated on Plate 21. Note: on the night of 2nd/3rd September 1916, a fleet of sixteen airships embarked on the biggest raid so far. Among the pilots scrambled to counter this was Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson, originally with the Worcestershire Regiment, but now fighting with the Royal Flying Corps, soon to become the Royal Air Force. Flying an obsolete B.E.2c, Lieutenant Robinson encountered a Shutter-Lanz SL-11 airship over north London and engaged it in a David and Goliath encounter. Attacking from beneath, Robinson strafed the ship with machine-gun fire. The SL-11 burst into flames and crashed in a field behind the Plough Inn, Cuffley, killing all sixteen men on board.

An impressive WW1 silver platedy presentation vase to Flight Sergeant Ernest Haxton, Royal Flying Corps. Wreath embossed rim the body tapering slightly into 3 scalloped feet on plain base. Brass bordered copper presentation panel, with applied RFC badge at the top, inscribed `Presented to Flt. /Sergeant Ernest Haxton for his daring action in attacking German airships on the 1st October 1916. From the Officers of the 39th Home Defence Squadron`. Makers mark `Wallace Trophy 338-16` on base. Height 40.5cm diameter of top and base 16.5 cm. Together with Haxton`s `Soldiers Small Book`, showing that he enlisted into the RFC in Dundee in 1913. Also his leather bound Aviators Certificate as a pilot. Issued by the Royal Aero Club of the United Kingdom on behalf of the Federation Auronautique Internationale- British Empire, dated 15 July 1916 with photo of E Haxton in uniform. GC some very light denting. Illustrated on Plate 22.
