A COALPORT SPILL VASE, DECORATED AT MADELEY, C1830 painted with two panels of Sèvres style birds, 14cm h, inscribed in red No 67 8... 3/Tea Provenance: Dowlish Wake Antiques, 28th July 1992. With its flat unglazed base (compare lot 220A) this vase is apparently Coalport porcelain decorated at Madeley with the 'bunnies ears' gilding, named by Howard Coutts. The birds are rather different and apparently by an artist other than Randall. Only two other examples of this 'bunnies ears gilding' are known, both in the Bowes Museum. An inkstand of Continental hard past, X3328 illustrated H Coutts, Articles in Fashion, Antique Dealer & Collectors' Guide, July 1997, fig 3 and a pair of jardinières, hard past porcelain, X3366. The small flower groups on the inkstand and jardinières are those of R B Gray for Randall. Randall was clearly able to add coloured ground sand gilding to enhance the attractiveness and sale potential of typical 'slightly' decorated Sèvres pieces, without damaging the original enamelling. No Reserve
