Fare, La Vie Silencieuse en France La Nature Morte au XVIIIe siecle, Fribourg, 1976, p. 233, ill., fig. 365Anne Vallayer-Coster, renowned for her still life paintings, was one of the best known female French artists of the 18th century. However, little is known about her artistic training but her father was a goldsmith at the Gobelins Manufactory and may have been her first teacher. In 1770, at the age of just 26, she was unanimously accepted into the prestigious Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture and attracted considerable attention including an announcement of the event in the Mercure de France (E. Kahng and M. Roland Michel, eds., Anne Vallayer-Coster: Painter to the Court of Marie-Antoinette, exh. cat., Dallas 2002, p.17).She exhibited regularly at the annual Salons between 1771-1817 and was named court painter to Marie Antoinette in 1780. Anne Vallayer married Jean-Pierre Coster, a member of parliament and lawyer from Nancy, in 1781 and thereafter was known as Vallayer-Coster. We can therefore be certain that the present painting dates to after 1781. The lustrous blue vase is a repeated motif in her works which perhaps suggests it was a studio prop; see for example the still life in Metropolitan Museum, New York (acc. no. 07.225.504), dated 1780, and a work offered at Christie's, Paris, 16 June 2021, lot 10, dated 1781.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
