These receptacles were essentially vinaigrettes designed to revive the senses (hence the name: an egg containing smelling salts or aromatic vinegar to revive the senses). It was traditional in Scandinavia for a young man to present a 'hovedvandsæg' (in Denmark) to the young lady of his choice as an indication of his intentions.
