A Chinese Famille Rose Vase Yuhuchunping Qing Dynasty H 30cm Uesugi Mochinori (April 15, 1844 - April 18, 1919) was a prominent political figure during Japan's late Edo, Meiji, and Taisho periods. He served as the last lord of the Yonezawa domain in Dewa country. Born as the illegitimate son of Saiken Uesugi, he was designated as his heir shortly after birth. In 1860, when the Yuanfu was established, he accepted the taboo of Tokugawa leshige and was given the name Maoxian. With the abolition of feudal clans and establishment of counties in 1871, Maoxian was ordered to move to Tokyo. He self-funded a trip to England to study and upon his return, he was appointed as the magistrate of Okinawa in May 1881. Uesugi was a patron of Chinese culture and avidly collected Chinese antiques throughout his life. Uesugi Mochinori passed away on April 18, 1919 (Taisho 8) at the age of 76. He was posthumously given the Dharma name Xiande Yuan.
