Lacune ai margini inferiore e superiore del frontespizio, evidente macchia al margine inferiore delle prime due carte altrimenti buon esemplare. Legatura secentesca in pelle su cartone, titoli in oro su tassello al dorso, abrasioni ai piatti e difetti alle cerniere. Numerose note manoscritte con riferimenti al Systema di Linneo a margine delle illustrazioni. Edizione originale della prima parte del trattato dello zoologo francese Guillame Rondelet, arricchito di un vasto apparato di xilograficie su disegno di Georges Reverdy e un ritratto dell`autore, sempre inciso in legno, di mano di Pierre Vase. Si tratta di uno dei tre più importanti libri illustrati di ittiologia del Cinquecento, tra i primi a descrivere non creature marine fantastiche ma pesci, cetacei, molluschi e crostacei realmente esistenti, secondo un metodo che sarà ripreso da Francis Willoughby, John Ray, Pietro Artedi e Linnaeus.
