AN EXTREMELY RARE EARLY WORCESTER VASE of lobed baluster form with pierced lug handles, enamelled in polychrome with a Chinaman in a fenced garden, with plants and flowers sprouting from rockwork and two birds overhead, the reverse with a spray of flowers, the neck with two old hair cracks which may be associated with the firing, circa 1752-1754, 33/4. The palette used on this previously unrecorded vase is typical of the earliest decoration at the Worcester factory. (See Simon Spiro and Richard Burt: Lund's Bristol and Early Worcester porcelain 1750-58: The AJ Smith Collection", published London 2005, pages 123-126). Parallels are often made with decoration found on Staffordshire white opaque glass and white stoneware. A vase of comparable form decorated with the "banded hedge" pattern and datable to 1752-54 was exhibited by Steppes Hill Farm Antiques at the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair 1989 (illustrated on page 188 of the catalogue).
