CELADON-GLAZE VASE, SONG / YUAN DYNASTY the baluster sides carved with bands of scrolling foliage, 34cm high The dating of this piece is consistent with Oxford Authentication Report C299e32. CIZHOU-TYPE MEIPING VASE, MING DYNASTY, the sides painted with panels depicting courtiers, a Qilin and a stork, within wide bands of stylised flowerhead scrolls, underside of foot bears an old trade label, 28cm high Note: The vase tells the Jin (265-420 AD) story of Deng Bodao, who was taken prisoner while serving as the governor of Hedong by the rebel leader Shi Le. Following his eventual escape, Bodao, along with his wife, son and nephew, were pursued by the rebel mounted troop. The couple realised they would be unable to remain uncaptured carrying both young boys. Thus in the knowledge that they could have another child, they agreed to abandon their own son, tying him to a tree, in order to continue the bloodline of his late brother.

The Walter Blumenthal Collection. The Bernard Gimbel Collection. The Warren E. Cox Collection. Christie's New York, 22nd March 1999, lot 287. Exhibited: The Arts of the Ming, Detroit Institute of Art, 1952, no.178 (dated at that time c.1400). The World in Colours, OCS Exhibition 2006, no.26. Note: the form of this vase is inspired by Yuan Dynasty blue and white examples. It is very rare to find one in this sancai-style glazed palette. Only one other directly comparable vase is known, which was sold by Bonhams London, 16th May 2013, lot 58A. Note: it is likely that the enamelling on this vase was carried out at Swatow rather than Dehua. For a very similar vase see Donnelly, P.J., Blanc de Chine, London 1969, pl.134B.
