Chinese Wukai vase, Qing dynasty, Kangxi period. First quarter of the 18th century.Hand-painted porcelain.Slightly chipped and hair on the mouth.Seal on the reverse.Measurements: 60 cm (height); 24 cm (largest diameter).Wukai porcelain vase from the "Green Family" of the Kangxi period (1662-1722), with circular forms, elongated neck and open circular mouthpiece. Hand-painted with scenes of warriors, plant decorations and borders. The Kangxi Emperor was a great promoter and patron of the porcelain industry. It was during his rule that the ailing industry received a major revival. The artistic achievements made between the late 17th and early 18th centuries place these pieces among the finest in history. Wucai or Wu tsai porcelain for export, produced by folk kilns during the Kangxi period, has historically been referred to by Westerners as "green family porcelain". This name was given by Albert Jacquemart in the book Historie artistique, industrielle et commerciale de la porcelain, Paris 1862, to denote a group of wares where the green glaze presents a certain leadership in the decorative composition. The term 'famille verte' sometimes refers to a range of wares which, in the opinion of Chinese experts, is often erroneous. Wucai porcelain of the Kangxi period is a type of porcelain produced between the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the distinctive feature of which is a polychrome decoration based on the use of low-temperature glazes of various colours.

Lot 17

Chinese vase. Qing dynasty, 19th century.Blue-grey celadon porcelain. Some old restoration.Measures: 58 x 23 x 23 cm.Chinese vase, late Qing dynasty, 19th century. Hexagonal shape with open mouth, with side handles in the shape of small Foo dogs. Polychromed in bluish-grey celadon enamel.Celadon refers both to a glaze colour and to a type of pottery specific to China (Chinese: qingci, literally 'green porcelain'). Korean celadon ware from the Goryeo period (918-1392) used this translucent green or blue-grey glaze. There is, however, early celadon in China, where the process was invented in the Yue region of the Yangtze River basin. Celadon is very popular in Asia, as it allows the colour of jade, the sacred stone, to be obtained.

Lot 23

Chinese "Meiping" vase. Qing Dynasty, 19th century.Hand-painted porcelain.Measures: 36 x 22 x 22 cm.Chinese vase from the end of the Qing Dynasty, 19th century, with circular forms, small neck and the mouth open at the top. Hand-painted with vegetal, geometric and border decorations in various colours.Meiping (meaning 'prunus vase') is the later name given to jars with constricted necks that were originally used to hold alcohol. Decorative jugs like this one were used for serving at the table, the liquor having been decanted from larger vases. Later these vases were used to hold branches of plum blossom. It is a tall vase, with a narrow base that extends gracefully into a broad body, followed by a highly rounded shoulder, a short narrow neck with a small top opening.

Lot 6

Chinese vase, Qing dynasty, Qianlong period. Late 18th century.Hand-painted porcelain.Mouthpiece with restoration with grooves (staples).Seal on the reverse.Measurements: 63 cm (height); 37 cm (largest diameter).Chinese vase from the Qing dynasty, Qianlong period, late 18th century, of circular forms with elongated upper neck and open circular mouthpiece. The side handles have zoomorphic forms. Hand-painted with palace scenes of characters, vegetal ornamentation and borders of great quality and colour. The seal on the reverse confirms the period of the vase.Ch'ien-lung (1711-1799) was the fourth emperor of the Ch'ing, or Manchu, dynasty in China. His rule spanned a span of 63 years, a longer reign than any other in recorded Chinese history. In Ch'ien-lung's reign, the Ch'ing dynasty reached its zenith and began the downward spiral that would culminate in the Revolution of 1911, which marked the final demise of imperial China. He was one of the greatest imperial patrons of the arts and literature.

Lot 75

Quianlong vase, 18th century.Porcelain with white on white decoration. The base is chipped.Measurements: 45,5 x 21,5 cm.This Quianlong vase has a circular base and a trumpet-shaped body. It has been decorated using the white-on-white technique, combined with gilt floral motifs inscribed in polygonal pavilions. The Qianlong Emperor, a member of the Qing dynasty, ruled China from 1736 to 1795, and is remembered to this day as one of the most cultured emperors and one of the most important in terms of art collecting. His long reign was a particularly interesting moment in Chinese history. At that time, the country was the richest and most populous nation in the world. Qianlong was able to preserve and foster his own Manchu warrior and hunter traditions, and combine them with the adoption of Confucian principles of political and cultural leadership, thus achieving an effective and stable government. Indeed, it was his ability to adopt Chinese customs while honouring his Manchu tradition that made him one of the most successful emperors of the Qing dynasty. Qianlong studied Chinese painting, and especially enjoyed the art of calligraphy, highly regarded in this culture, indeed conceived as the highest of the arts.
