A Chinese Junyao bowl with thick and even, slightly mottled, turquoise glaze, ending irregularly above the circular unglazed foot; 12.5 cm diameterProvenance: The Property of a Gentleman. From a Scottish Private Collection. Acquired by the owner about 1967. The bowl is accompanied by an original letter, written on 23rd January, 1968, by William Wells (1913-2003), the former keeper of the famous Burrell Collection (now located at the Pollok Country Park in Glasgow, G43 1AT). Although Wells does not actually date this bowl, he concludes that: 'The well of the foot which is covered with a blue and brown glaze is partly obscured by a modern ink-written label of identification including 'no. 194', presumably referring to its lot number in a sale.' This label, sadly, is no longer extant. For another example of thick glaze pooling irregularly across the foot, see the Yuan Dynasty vase (No. 342) in He Li's 'Chinese Ceramics/The New Standard Guide'. Condition Report Please note that there are some areas of damage or deterioration including a star crack in the well.
A Chinese celadon vase with copper mounted rim, decorated with a bold floral design, 17.5 cm high, Ming Dynasty.The original shape of this heavily potted vase is interesting to postulate, and it is tempting to consider that it has not been extensively cut down. According to He Li's 'Chinese Ceramics/The New Standard Guide' (No. 328), this shape, with a small, cylindrical rim and a total height of 21.9 cm, did occur during the Northern Song and Jin era. Condition Report Please note that the vase has been cut down and that the metal mount is therefore later; Other damage includes areas of degradation, loss or deterioration to both body and foot rim.
