A VERY FINE 22 BORE INDIAN SILVER-MOUNTED MATCHLOCK MUSKET, LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY INDORE with swamped multi-stage sighted barrel retained by seven chased slender silver bands, formed with a fluted vase-shaped muzzle, pronounced breech incorporating the back-sight, decorated over its full surface with encrusted gold designs of flowers on a trellis ground, bands of larger flowerheads and foliage and a brief inscription, probably Hindi, at the breech, enclosed action with gilt serpentine and trigger, the latter decorated with differing paterns of flowers on each side, wooden full stock entirely encased in silver embossed with scrolling foliage and flowers on a punched ground enclosed within foliate frames, slender slightly hooked butt en suite and incorporating a gutter-shaped recess for sighting behind the breech, a pair of silver sling swivels (pricker missing), and original iron ramrod decorated with gilt chevrons 130cm; 51 1/4in barrel A less elaborate gun with mounts decorated in a similar manner and attributed to Indore is illustrated in Egerton, 1896, p. 118, no. 544.

A FRENCH SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK SPORTING GUN FOR PRESENTATION TO AN EASTERN POTENTATE, DATED 1816 with two-stage swamped `Spanish` barrel fitted with silver `spider` fore-sight, chiselled with a band of acanthus on a gilt ground at the girdle, inscribed `En Eybar de Herraduras ano de 1816` in silver enclosed by sprays of silver foliage over the breech and stamped with the barrelsmith`s marks, `J-Hybara`, and a series of gold-lined decorative marks (losses), gold-lined vent, engraved tang, flush-fitting lock chiselled with scrolling foliage on a gilt ground (losses), pierced cock decorated en suite, semi-rainproof pan (previously gold-lined), figured walnut full stock cut with a panel of chequering at the fore-end and the grip (small chips, inlaid over the greater part of its surface with engraved silver floral plaquettes and silver wire scrollwork, the butt inlaid with a brief inscription on each side of the spine and decorated with further designs including a pair of cornucopia and a vase on each side of the butt (the silver inlays and wire with losses and replacements), silver mounts stamped with eastern or North African marks, comprising solid side-plate decorated with trophies-of-arms, trigger-guard decorated with trophies on the bow and rococo ornament on the finial, butt-plate en suite, three ramrod-pipes, and a pair of sling swivels (later ramrod) 91cm; 35 7/8in barrel The inscription is of North African type and reads `amal al-hajj al-sadiq idris`, in translation `The work of the sincere pilgrim, Idris`.
