A Chinese famille rose vase, Republic, of hexagonal section with everted rim and foot, finely painted in colours with figures of three concubines, possibly Ban Jieyu, Zhao Feiyan and Zhao Hede with calligraphic text above and to three sides, the rim and foot with scrolling flowers and foliage on a turquoise ground, iron red seal mark to base, 32cm high. Footnote: The decoration and text on this piece appear to relate to the life and times of Ban Jieyu, consort to Han Dynasty emperor Chengdi. Jieyu was a great scholar and poet, credited with writing 'Yuan Ge Xing' or 'Song of Resentment' in which she compares herself with a discarded fan. In portraits Jieyu is often depicted holding a fan, as in the present item.
