A rare Vauxhall blue and white vase: of ogee form with foliate scrolled handles, painted with panels depicting an extensive oriental lake landscape, the reverse with an attendant holding a parasol above two Chinese figures with a pagoda to one side, the panels reserved on a solid blue floral ground, on circular pedestal foot, circa 1755-58, 13.5 cm high [minor chip to rim]. *Notes The shape is copied from the Vincennes 'Vase à Oreilles' designed by Jean-Claude Duplessis in the 1750s. An almost identical underglaze blue decorated vase was illustrated [plate 203 c and d] ECC Transactions 1989 Vol.13 Part 3. Vauxhall polychrome vases of this shape are usually attributed to the atelier of James Giles.
