GALLE EMILE: (1846-1904) French Artist, famous for his works in glass and recognised as one of the leading figures in the French Art Nouveau movement. A.L., unsigned, on two sides of his personal printed oblong 12mo visiting card, n.p. (Nancy), n.d., evidently to a client, in French. Galle states that he will fulfill his promise [of completing a funeral urn for a mutual friend] for the following day, and confirms the inscription on the vase, 'Personne n'a un plus grand amour que de donner sa vie pour les amis. Saint Jean XV'. (from the Gospel of John, Chapter XV, Verse 13). A light stain to the verso only slightly affects a few words of text and with one very small hole, otherwise VG
A Ridgway, Bates & Co vase, c1856-58, painted by Simpson with a basket overflowing with fruit suspended from festoons, a similar subsidiary panel, and to the reverse, naturalistic flowers, in elaborate cisele cartouches reserved on a cobalt ground, 30cm h Design No 1276 in the Factory Pattern Book. A section of a Chinese gu vase, 18th c, painted in underglaze blue with deities and sages within hexafoil reserves, diaper ground, 24.5cm h, Kangxi artemisia leaf but probably later, a fragmentary bottle vase, 18th/19th c, polychrome cranes and scrolling clouds on a white ground, turquoise interior, 15cm h, six-character Yongzheng mark within concentric circles, a circular plate, early-mid 18th c, painted with pheasants and flowering foliage on a rocky outcrop in underglaze blue, picked out in iron red and gilt, 22.5cm diam, two pieces of Canton famille rose, c. 1860, (5) The vase section with associated rim repairs and having being grounded following break. Its foot chipped with resulting loss of foot rim section. The bottle vase broken, lacking all above the shoulder. The circular plate with rim chips and two stained hairline cracks. Ditto Canton plate. The Canton cup handle riveted repair. Each piece with expected pitting and surface wear.
