Gavin Hamilton sold the vase to his nephew, the 2nd Earl of Warwick, who built a specially commissioned conservatory in the grounds of Warwick Castle to house it. The vase quickly became one of the most celebrated pieces of antiquity known in Britain and in 1778, Piranesi produced an engraving of the vase which subsequently served as inspiration for reproductions in a variety of medium. The present alabaster reproduction of the Warwick Vase was commissioned by Alexander Davison who was a businessman and government contractor and was a close friend of Admiral Lord Nelson.
